Cooperating around sustainable fisheries: French initiatives on spiny lobster, black scallops and brown crab

Study visits and knowledge exchange are a practical way to find inspiration and advice when launching projects. To help those interested in supporting initiatives aimed at sustainable fishing, the Fisheries and Aquaculture Committee of Finistère (Brittany, France) is offering to share their experience of working on three particular projects:

Spiny Lobster stock restoration: Since 2015, the Finisterian fishermen have been coordinating this project to restore France’s stock of spiny lobster using a bottom-up management system along with a tag-recapture programme.

DIRAPEN: In an effort to diversify shellfish fisheries in the Rade de Brest, this recent project researches favourable areas and conditions to develop black scallops.

ACRUNET: The “Atlantic Crab Resource Users Transnational Network” was a three-year project that brought together 15 partners (producers, researchers, suppliers…) from France, Ireland and the UK to find solutions to better market brown crab and ensure more sustainable and high-quality products.
