A workshop led by the Committee of the Regions’ NAT Commission secretariat and the FARNET Support Unit during the European Days of Cities and Regions (8-10 October)
At the initiative of DG MARE, FARNET Support Unit together with the Committee of the Regions organised a workshop at the European Week of Regions and Cities (EWRC) on “CLLD – EU funding from the bottom-up”. The workshop aimed to give participants an overview of what Community-led Local Development (CLLD) is and how it works. The evolution and potential of CLLD funded from different European Structural and Investment Funds were presented from the perspective of local, regional and EU actors.

Director General of Fisheries Development. Xunta de Galicia (Spain) Susana Rodríguez Carballo is Director General of Fisheries Development in the Xunta de Galicia since 2009. In the Xunta she started as a Fisheries Extension Agent, becoming later the Head of Service of the Shellfish Department in the Directorate of Marine Resources.

Member of the European Economic and Social Committee Roman Haken is a Senior manager for International Relations in the Centre for Community Work in the Czech Republic. He is also a member of European Economic and Social Committee since 2006 and delegate from the Czech Republic in the group “Diversity Europe” (Group III) of the Section for Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment as well as of the Section for Economic and Monetary Union and Economic and Social Cohesion.

ENRD Contact Point Paul is a Senior Policy Expert of the ENRD Contact Point. He used to be Team Leader of the FARNET Support Unit and was previously involved in the LEADER Observatories and URBACT. He was co-author of the EC Guidance on CLLD and was the manager of a LEADER local action group in Spain during LEADER I and II.

South Finland LEADER Fisheries Local Action Group Marjo is the Director of South Finland Local Action Group (LAG), founded as a LEADER group in 2000 and which now is a LEADER LAG as well as a FLAG on parts of its territory. The (F)LAG also has experience with urban local development. Marjo has been involved in the process and the local development actions from the beginning. |
The speakers stressed that the CLLD approach is successful in mobilising different actors, tackling local challenges, creating jobs, building trust and bringing EU funding closer to the local people. The workshop was attended by over 200 participants, including local, regional and national authorities, local LAG and FLAG partnerships, national networks and experts.
