Closing the Loop: circular economy in fishing and aquaculture areas

The theme of this event was “Closing the Loop: circular economy in fishing and aquaculture areas”. The seminar was organised at the initiative of the European Commission with the support of the Basque Coast FLAG, the Region of New-Aquitaine and the French National Directorate of Fisheries and Aquaculture (DPMA).

It was an opportunity for FLAGs to better understand what circular economy is and help them exchange on different types of actions and projects they might undertake related to themes such as:

- Encouraging local production and consumer habits to move away from the traditional "take, make and dispose" model and become more sustainable, e.g. through sustainable sourcing of materials, eco-design, sharing and re-use of products, etc.

- Finding ways to minimise waste and ensure the value of products and materials is maintained for as long as possible.

- Identifying opportunities for developing new economic activities based on by-products and waste from fisheries and aquaculture (organic fish waste, shells, plastic…)

The seminar themes were addressed through a series of presentations, working groups discussions, mini-plenary sessions, a project fair and a field visit.
