The area is defined by the Ria Formosa (which covers five municipalities), a natural river system, structuring the landscape and ecological systems, which gives the Sotavento its own characteristics. The Eastern Algarve is home to the largest wetland in southern Portugal, 11,000 hectares large stretching along approximately 60 km of coastline between Ancão (Loulé) and Manta Rota (Vila Real de Santo António). It forms a lagoon-estuarine system with a wide area of marshes, islands and channels protected by robust sand ridges, which form two peninsulas (Ancão and Cacela) and five barrier islands (Barreta, Culatra, Armona, Tavira and Cabanas).

The FLAG area extends over a coastal area of 35km and covers five parishes in two municipalities. This territory is noted for its traditional small-scale fisheries. This is a predominantly agricultural area with a growing tourist sector thanks to its accessible beaches.

Coming from a long-established fishing family, André felt it was time to innovate their ways of utilizing the sea. He’s managed to do just that by setting up marine discovery tours in his traditional fishing village of Ferragudo, Portugal. Today, he shares his passion and knowledge of the local environment with the region’s tourists.

The “Cabaz do mar” or basket of the sea is a short chain marketing scheme set up by a partnership between TAIPA, a local development company, and an association of inhabitants and fishermen in Azenha do Mar.

The area covers the municipalities of Alcácer do Sal, Grândola, Sines, Santiago do Cacém, Odemira. In economic terms, the FLAG area is characterised as having a low business density, with agriculture and tourism being the most important sectors. A restructuring of the local economy is, therefore, an essential element of any local development strategy.

The harvesting of goose barnacles (Pollicipes pollicipes) is an important economic activity in the Berlengas archipelago, located north of Lisbon around the Peniche peninsula.

The Mondego Mar FLAG is located in the centre of the Portuguese coastline and covers the municipalities of Cantanhede, Figueira da Foz, Mira and Montemor-o-Velho. This area is composed of marine, freshwater and estuarine ecosystems creating a complex and rich environment and hosting a range of fisheries activities, from aquaculture to shellfish harvesting to coastal fisheries.

The FLAG area is located on the Atlantic coast in the north of Portugal and covers 12 local administrative units in three municipalities. These municipalities have traditionally had strong economic, social and cultural links with the sea (fishing, fish markets, fish processing, canning, aquatic and nautical sports and seafood restaurants).

Located in the north of Portugal, the Litoral Norte (North Coast) is part of the Alto Minho region (NUT III), which is composed of 25 communes that make up five coastal and inland municipalities (Braga, Viana do Castelo, Caminha, Vila Nova de Cerveira and Valença).
