The area is characterised by a strong coastal urbanisation receiving 50% of the tourists that visit the Ligurian coast. Agriculture and industry are also well developed.

The FLAG area is situated in the southeast of Sicily and encompasses the provinces of Siracusa and Ragusa. The region has a strong agriculture and tourism sectors and a historical seafaring culture.

The FLAG area is situated in the western part of Sicily and the region’s economy is largely dependent on the sea. Fishing and canning are the two main local industries and fishers typically catch tuna using the ‘mattanza’ technique.

The area is characterised by small-scale fisheries with about 50 small boats and 6 landing areas (only two vessels over 12m, no big ports). Challenges here are linked to fishermen’s low competitiveness and poor linkages with the tourism sector.

The FLAG area lies within the northern part of the province of Viterbo or ‘Tuscia’ and comprises Lake Bolsena. The lake is currently surrounded by numerous tourist establishments which, in large, cater for camping and agrotourism.

The FLAG's territory is characterised by diverse coastal areas and inland hills. Many areas in the region are protected and are important environmentally.

Geologically, the FLAG area falls in Campi Flegrei caldera, a volcanic area northwest of Naples, where both active and extinct craters exist. This area is also part of a regional park. Fish farms are present along the coast line.

The FLAG area stretches along the coastal strip overlooking the Gulf of Naples, and features strong views of the islands of Capri, Ischia and Procida throughout. Close to Naples, there is a significant amount of interaction between urban and coastal areas.

The FLAG area which consists of the Ischia, Procida and Vivara isles covers an area of approximately 75km2. The surrounding seabeds are characterised by vast posidonia meadows, a seaweed endemic to the Mediterranean Sea, which is home to many species of fishes. As a result, fishing has always been a very important activity in the area.
