EMPREAMAR – business mentoring and coaching - FLAG Fisterra - Ría Muros - Noia - ES

The EMPREAMAR project has targeted local people, in particular the unemployed from the fisheries sector, with the provision of business mentoring, coaching and financial support in order to encourage the creation of new sustainable businesses in the fisheries sector. The project has resulted in the creation of 8 new business initiatives in the FLAG area.

Getting young people into commercial sea fishing - FLAG Cornwall and Isles of Scilly - UK


Training courses from Cornwall, UK, show how FLAGs can support skills acquisition and restore the attractiveness of the sector to young professionals. 19 young unemployed people have subsequently found work in fishing and fishing related sectors.

“Bagenkop Fish” cooperative trading company - FLAG Langeland - DK

Four local fishermen from Denmark teamed up to launch their own trading company following the closure of a large fishmonger and the diminishing market opportunities in the area. The company has since expanded into the downstream supply chain by developing a small processing workshop, a mobile fish shop and a smokehouse. Six jobs have been created in the local area.

Business & accounting training for fishing families - FLAG West Flanders - BE

In collaboration with the local producer organisation, the West Flanders FLAG supported a business and accounting training course for fishermen’s wives managing the accounts of local fishing companies. It quickly proved as popular among fishermen as it was with their wives.

Attracting young people to professional fishing - FLAG South Finland - FI

Thanks to the combination of an apprenticeship project for young fishers and FLAG support to improve a local fishing business, 33 year old Tanja is now a successful fisherwoman and entrepreneur, selling her fresh and processed produce directly to consumers.

Mistral sweet factory and café - FLAG Slowinska - PL

 The setting up of a sweet factory that uses Omega 3 acids from fish, complete with cafeteria, helped generate additional income for a fisherman and his family, as well as contributing to the touristic attractiveness of the fishing port of Ustka.

Aquamar: a new method of water purification - FLAG Bytow Lake District - PL

FLAG technical assistance and financial support helped a creative project holder turn his idea into an innovative and profitable eco-business offering water purification services to fishermen and aquaculture farms.

Studying fisheries sustainability - FLAG Esko - FI

In cooperation with WWF and using MSC methodology, the ESKO FLAG coordinated a study for small-scale fishermen into the sustainability of their fishing activities.

Women entrepreneurs in Andalusia’s fisheries areas - Andalusian FLAGs - ES

All seven Andalusian FLAGs participated in a cooperation project to foster women entrepreneurship across the region by studying the experiences of local women and promoting successful female entrepreneurs as role models to others to turn their business ideas into reality.

Jammerbugt Boat Shop - FLAG North Jutland - DK

The Thorup beach fishermen’s guild, the “Thorupstrand Kystfiskerlaug”, has reconverted one of its traditional fishing boats into a floating fish shop and obtained authorisation to moor it in the heart of Copenhagen. This is giving the fishing guild’s products a special entry point to the affluent market of the Danish capital.
