Telling the Story: is CLLD something to eat?

The conference "Telling the Story – Communicating European Structural and Investment Funds 2014-2020" was organised by the European Commission in Brussels on 9-10 December 2013. More than 700 participants, from and outside the EU, took part to this event co-organised by DG-REGIO, DG-EMPL, DG-AGRI and DG-MARE of the European Commission.

Over two days, more than seventy speakers animated and facilitated sixteen workshops, sharing their knowledge and advice on challenges and innovative ways to better communicate the objectives and results of European Structural Funds.

These workshops addressed issues such as dealing with negative publicity, the use of socialmedia, data visualisation or crowdsourcing. A dedicated workshop was organised by FARNET on the topic of "Communicating CLLD". Facilitated by Paul Soto (FARNET Support Unit), this workshop looked at the challenges and opportunites to better define and examplify the objectives, results and the multiple sources of Community Led Local Development.

Starting at local level with Axis4 supported project Drecklyfish, Cornwall & Isles of Scilly FLAG manager Chris Ranford showed how CLLD translates in terms of entrepreneurship, innovation and ownership at local level. Then, mMoving on to communicating CLLD benefits at the area level, Thomas Müller, LAG manager in Sauwald Austria posed the question "Is CLLD something to eat?", making the point of the need to find simple ways to explain the facts and possibilities of CLLD. Reinhard Fischer, from Berlin’s Neighbourhoud Management Scheme explained the practicalities and specificities of urban area, whereas Toby Johnson, from Social Entrepreneurship Network (SEN) presented the successes and lessons learnt of the Portuguese government programme Choices (Escolhas).
