As part of a broader cooperation project to promote the image of fishing and the coastal culture of the Mediterranean, a new online radio station gives a voice to ideas, news, culture and activities related to fisheries and the sea.

Sponging up pollution

Marine sponges are filter feeder organisms known to accumulate metallic trace elements and digest fecal bacteria from the marine environment. That’s why academic researchers from the LBCM (Université de Bretagne Sud) teamed up with shellfish farmers to explore the filtration capacities of marine sponges to improve sea-water quality in shellfish farming areas.

TELECAPECHE is an e-technology system that provides real-time data to local fisheries and aquaculture committees, helping them to monitor fish stocks and adopt suitable management measures. Launched with Axis 4 support, the system’s creators are now looking at some big developments using CLLD under the EMFF.

Simplifying preparatory support in Poland

Polish FLAGs can choose from two flexible support options to prepare their local development strategies. Both options have benefited from a simplification and streamlining of the process of activating preparatory support.

Fishing gear diversification

Axis 4 financial support helped a fisherman on the Estonian island of Hiiumaa to diversify his activities outside of the fishing season into the production of fishing gear and multi-purpose nets. As well as creating a part-time job for this fisherman, it has also created four full-time jobs for local women.

Legends of Kitka: videogamers, get ready to fish!

In 2013, to limit the proliferation of “fake” products using the name of the local fish, “Kitkan Viisas” vendace, fishermen from Kuusamo, Northern Finland, teamed up to secure its listing in the EU’s Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) scheme. To further promote this unique product, a web and mobile video game, called the Legends of Kitka, was also developed.

In Asturias, Spain, the Nuestra Señora de la Atalaya cofradía (fishermen’s organisation) has increased the tourism and cultural value of the local fisheries sector by equipping the local auction house for guided tours and educational activities.

Blue crab supports blue growth in northern Greece

In Chalastra, Greece, the local FLAG has helped two budding entrepreneurs to establish a successful seafood conditioning and processing business, specialising in live blue crab.


O Cabaz do Mar - Getting closer to the customer

The “Cabaz do mar” or basket of the sea is a short chain marketing scheme set up by a partnership between TAIPA, a local development company, and an association of inhabitants and fishermen in Azenha do Mar.

National networks – connecting FLAGs and building local capacity in CLLD

National networks (NNs) play an important role in developing the capacity of FLAGs and managing authorities (MAs), and in stimulating and supporting transnational cooperation.  In Estonia, the NN 2007-2013 worked in close collaboration with the MA to facilitate dialogue and ensure good cooperation between all actors involved in fisheries CLLD. It also developed information tools, and provided guidance and capacity building for the FLAGs.
