Sweden - Lake Vänern added to UNESCO's biosphere network

Lake Vänern is an inland area around which one of the 14 Swedish FLAGs has been set up.

Together with the nearby mount Kinekulle, the lake is now part of the second biosphere reserve opened in September 2010. This initiative was born out of the substantial work that went into the award-winning LIFE+ Nature project (LIFE02 NAT/S/008484). The United Nations Educational, Social and Cultural Organisation announced earlier in the year that it was adding the roughly 100-square-kilometre “Vänerkulle” site to its network of biosphere reserves. A statement by the UNESCO advisory committee acknowled the “importance of the site in terms of its rich biological diversity
