FARNET Guide #6: Green Growth in Europe’s Fisheries Areas

Ecosystems are at the centre of all human activities: the quality of freshwater underlies the quality of food production inland; natural coastlines and sand dunes will be key elements in storm and flood prevention; and, of course, without properly functioning marine ecosystems, fish stocks would inevitably collapse and the farming of fish would be impossible. With this 6th edition of the FARNET thematic guides we aim to demonstrate, through both theory and practical examples, how FLAGs can contribute to attractive and profitable fisheries areas while applying some key principles that will help ensure environmentally sustainable development.
We hope that this guide will offer some reflections and ideas which will inspire and motivate Fisheries Local Action Groups (FLAGs) in achieving their goals as drivers of sustainable development in European fisheries areas.

Call for cooperation: Producing a video on sustainable fisheries and aquaculture

We want to make a video report on “Sustainable fisheries (and aquaculture)”. This reportage would be made by 9 young people from France who have already been chosen. We have some idea of destination: Spain and Portugal or Italy and Lithuania. They will go to visit professionals and make a short reportage on exemplary initiatives in sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, the difficulties of developing sustainable fisheries, the link between the different actors, the challenges…

Public consultation - Challenges and opportunities for maritime and coastal tourism in Europe

Acknowledging the economic potential of sustainable coastal and maritime tourism in the EU as well as the multiple challenges ahead for this sector, the European Commission will present a Communication on the "Challenges and Opportunities for Maritime and Coastal Tourism in the EU" in 2012. In view of the preparation of this Communication, the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries and the Directorate-General for Enterprise and Industry are launching a Public Consultation, which will be open until 6 August 2012

Through an online questionnaire, this consultation aims at gathering the opinion of individuals and stakeholders that have an interest in and would like to shape the EU actions in the maritime and coastal tourism sectors.

Ecotourism in a protected area, FLAG Sotavento, Portugal

 Ria Formosa is a natural park at the southern tip of Portugal. This fragile ecosystem is composed of tidal marshes and islands, where fishing and shellfish production remain important economic activities. This short video clip tells the story of a local shellfish producer, who had to reduce the scale of his operation to comply with environmental protection measures, and because of low profitability, but subsequently filled the gap by developing a complementary business providing eco-tours. Thanks to support from the local FLAG, João Sabino successfully developed and launched his eco-tourism project within the Ria Formosa natural park. By bringing tourists onto his shellfish concession, and explaining the history and environmental features of the area, João is now able to complement and integrate his work as a producer with an activity that helps people to learn about and look at the area differently.

New seaweed products, FLAG Bornholm & FLAG Small Islands, Denmark

 Danish waters produce high quality seaweed which, until now, has not been exploited commercially as there is no tradition of eating seaweed in Denmark. However, with the recent growth in the sushi market and New Nordic Cuisine, the Danish Small Islands FLAG and the Bornholm FLAG, both situated in remote areas where depopulation and a loss of business opportunities are serious concerns, have identified a new opportunity: the two FLAGs are cooperating in a project to create and develop a range of new local products that use seaweed as a raw material. 
This project brings together local producers, including fish farmers, mussel growers and processors to promote the sustainable cultivation, harvesting and processing of seaweed.

"FLAGs: Drivers of Green Growth in European Fisheries Areas”: Olhão, Portugal - 4-6th June 2012

Cooperation, creativity and a long-term commitment to sustainability are some of the main ingredients necessary for fisheries areas to be successful in safeguarding their environmental assets, while also benefitting from opportunities in the green economy. This was one of the main conclusions of the FARNET conference, "FLAGs: Drivers of Green growth in European Fisheries Areas”, which took place in Olhão, Portugal from the 4-6 June 2012.

This event brought together around 150 participants who witnessed first-hand the interactions between local operators and the Ria Formosa, a unique ecosystem of rias and mudpans established as a national park since the 1970’s. Through a combination of working groups and case studies, participants were introduced to different ways in which FLAGs can become drivers of Green growth in EU fisheries areas.

Fishing village anno 1906 - FLAG Bremerhaven - DE

Hit by the crisis of the seventies and eighties, the run down and somewhat industrial looking harbour area of Bremerhaven was the target of a series of regeneration projects. An Axis 4 project subsequently brought a fisheries dimension to these initiatives, aiming to increase the harbour´s attractiveness while also developing new outlets for fisheries products.


Fisheries, angling and education - FLAG From Salaca to Ruja - LV

Initiated by a local angling and tourism organisation, this project aims to revitalise the area around Lake Burtnieku which has a large but unexploited fishing potential, and to raise awareness about fishing, angling, health and the environment.


Crab flavouring for export - FLAG Middle and North Jutland - DK

The economic and environmental problems caused by crab overpopulation in Limfjord turned into a business opportunity for a local food processor when a Japanese company showed interest in buying a flavour enhancer based on crab.
