France: cooperation between FLAG Arcachon and FLAG Marennes Oléron

The French FLAGs from Marennes Oléron and Arcachon initiated their cooperation programme with a first meeting hosted by the Marennes Oléron FLAG on the island of St Pierre d'Oléron between the 27th and 28th of April.

The meeting was designed to bring together professional fishermen and shellfish producers of both areas to exchange experience on common problems, including the development of pesca-tourism, the legal constraints around diversification of activities and the causes and economic consequences of oyster mortality in both areas.

With representatives of both areas' fisheries and shellfish communities, but also of tourism offices, local administrations, maritime college and maritime family allowance fund, over 50 participants took part in various discussions around the island. Thematic workshops were held on pesca-tourism, innovative shellfish production methods, diversification, and fishing right transfers. Local actors presented project initiatives in each of these fields and this was followed by visits to a selection of Axis 4 projects.

The organisers also invited the Agrocampus research institute, represented by Marie Lesueur, to introduce their latest guide on diversification of fisheries and shellfish production activities in Britanny; and FARNET, which provided an overview of the solutions and opportunities brought by Axis 4 to some of the issues discussed as well as possible sources of inspiration arising from other European fisheries areas. This first meeting was successful in generating a great deal of enthusiasm and further cooperation ideas between the FLAG partners but also between fishermen, shellfish producers and local project promoters.

The second meeting will take place on June 8th and 9th, with the Marennes Oléron delegation visiting the Arcachon bay.

The fishing port of La Cotinière holds two auctions a day. The afternoon auction regularly welcomes visits of tourists, operated by a local fishmonger and combined with an introduction to fish preparation by a chefAmongst the Axis 4 projects presented, "l'atelier des gens de mer" is an initiative aiming for the social reinsertion of disabled people, who perform various useful tasks for local fishermen, such as net mending or paint works, under the supervision of "disembarked" professional fishermen
