Description of the area and its main challenges

The FLAG area is focused upon the fishing communities of Appledore, Ilfracombe, Clovelly and Bideford in Devon. The area is remote from main urban centres, very rural in character, with a high quality natural environment which is internationally recognized. The area is strongly linked to agriculture and Northern Devon is one of the most popular tourism destinations in the country, renowned for its beaches, surfing and country sports. The main fishing grounds are within the Bristol Channel, which supports a high quality and diverse fishery, as well as a small fishing fleet, which is today much reduced.

Economically, however, the area lags behind much of the UK, with few major employers, very low wages, low business productivity and skills, and pockets of high deprivation. Northern Devon is a regional priority for economic assistance and supported development.
