Description of the area and its main challenges

The Tornedalen (valley of river Torne) is situated on the border with Finland and flows into the gulf of Bothnia. This area is amongst the least populated areas of Sweden and covers an extensive water basin of fresh streams and rivers as well as a coastal archipelago. Tourism activities and processing hold good potential for diversifying the fisheries sector in the area. The main challenge of the FLAG is to achieve a sound and sustainable exploitation of the local resources.
