Description of the area and its main challenges

Halland county is situated on the Kattegat coast. The main fishing port in the county is Träslövsläge, which had 32 vessels in operation in 2010. Fisheries activities in this area target crustaceans, as well as herring, sprat, saithe, weever, cod and plaice. Several species such as cod and haddock are critically endangered and a “cod recovery plan” has strictly limited the catch in the Kattegat. There is potential to refocus on other species, such as mussel production in the fjords, and an opportunity to rebuild the area’s image as a hotspot of fisheries heritage.
The Halland FLAG was established in 2010 and encompasses the entire county of Halland. The FLAG includes representatives of fishermen, processing and trading, sports fishing, subsistence fishing, fishing waters, municipalities and the region.

Main focus of FLAG strategy

The strategy for the fisheries area of Halland builds on the Halland regional strategy for sustainable growth on the Kattegat coast. This regional strategy puts the emphasis on quality food and primary production as an important vector of economic development. Essential elements include the promotion of coastal resources and collaboration with the region's industry and academia for knowledge transfer and innovation.
