Description of the area and its main challenges

This FLAG area covers three interrelated but geographically different areas: coast, river and delta. It is a diverse area which varies from the coastline of cliffs and coves in the north (Ametlla-Ampolla), to the bays of Fangar and Alfacs, to the central delta area (Delta del Ebro) which is both National Park and renowned for its rice production. Comprising both Natura 2000 sites and National Parks, the environmental vale of this area stands out in particular. In terms of economic activities, the main sectors are tourism (especially along the coast), fisheries (professional and leisure) and agriculture (mainly rice). As Catalunya´s top mollusc producer, aquaculture is also very significant.

The main problem faced by the FLAG area is the increasing unemployment rate, reaching 33% in the delta zone. With this in mind, Axis 4 projects will focus on achieving sustainable development of the area by integrating fisheries, aquaculture and eco-tourism and eco-education activities in protected sites.

Population: 74 263

Main focus of FLAG strategy

The FLAG strategy aims to diversify the economy of the area and generate employment by focusing on eco-tourism, increasing of the value of local fisheries and aquaculture and, at the same time, integrating jobs in fishing with the tourism sector and educational policies. Cooperation projects and restoration of natural sites are also priorities for the FLAG.

Environmental Management (1-5, where 5 is high priority and 1 is low priority): 5
Improving the competitiveness of the fisheries sector (1-5): 4
Diversification into other activities (1-5): 4
Other: Linking the identity of the natural sites in the area with the high quality products produced (quality environment = quality employment = quality local products)

Project examples and ideas

- Eco-tourism activities in aquaculture installations, in cooperation with Galician FLAGs,
- Placing informative panels (with information on fishing boats, gear and fish captured by the local fishermen) in the port areas.
- Volunteering activities by the local population for raising awareness about and preserving the existing hiking routes in the protected areas. One of them will involve local fishing boats for cleaning some parts of FLAG area´s coastline. Axis 4 funds will be used for financing the infrastructure of these activities (e.g. a diploma that certifies participation in the conservation actions, leaflets, fuel for the participating fishing boats etc.)
- Promoting fish consumption among children of under 13 by a series of educational activities that will include classes about local fishing gear and the characteristics (environmental and nutritive) of local fish, a series of visits to fishing boats and fish markets and a cooking session with traditional recipes.

- Fishing organisation diversifies its ice production
