Description of the area and its main challenges

The FLAG is located along a strip of the Baltic Sea coast and 7 municipalities south of the sea with lakes. The area is sparsely populated, but the number of inhabitants keeps growing. The main economic activity is focused around fishing and tourism. The most important challenges related to the area´s development are: introducing new services for inhabitants, developing social, tourist and fishing infrastructure, strengthening the fisheries sector and creating alternative sources of incomes for people linked with fisheries.

Main focus of FLAG strategy

The FLAG´s strategy focuses on three key areas:

- increasing the area’s attractiveness as a place to live

- strengthening the tourist function

- maintaining an economically viable fisheries sector
