Description of the area and its main challenges

The Pojezierze Bytowskie FLAG is located in the south-western part of the Pomorskie region. The Bytow Lake District has a very varied landscape with a high number of crystal-clear lakes. More than half of the area is covered by forests. This area has been inhabited for ages by native Kaszuby people who remain to this day faithful to their tradition, including their own language and literature. The main industries of the area are the wood and metal industry.

Population Density/ Inhabitants/ km²: 36.7 Protected areas: the total protected area covers 47 608 hectares (including landscape parks of 31 704 ha, 13 204 ha of protected landscape areas, 1 664 ha of natural reserves, and 312 natural heritage sites); there are 11 Natura 2000 areas.

Main focus of FLAG strategy

The main priorities include: (1) rational utilisation of local resources to increase the role of the fisheries sector in the economic development of the area (protection and improvement of environment; sustainable development of tourism, in particular related to the fisheries sector; and strengthening the fisheries character of the area including improvement of direct sales of fish products) and (2) improving the quality of life and strengthening the local identity and activity of inhabitants (creating new jobs and maintaining existing ones; developing services; improvement of social infrastructure; increasing skills and knowledge of inhabitants; promotion of the area).
