Description of the area and its main challenges

The “Seši krasti” (Six Coasts) FLAG area incorporates six parishes in the Ventspils district, which is located between the Baltic Sea and the River Venta. The area attracts many tourists and an important challenge is to maintain a balance between nature conservation and economic development. The FLAG area has a 48 km coastline and although it has, traditionally, had an active fisheries sector, recreational activities are becoming more and more important. Fisheries, agriculture, wood processing and tourism are the most important economic activities. However, the area’s economic potential is being undermined by high levels of long term unemployment.

Main focus of FLAG strategy

The FLAG strategy aims to address the need to use local resources in a more focused way, in order to diversify the activities of local fishermen. For this reason there is a significant emphasis on investment in improving the quality of public infrastructure, which is used by the fisheries sector, tourists and locals.

Project examples and ideas

- The reconstruction of historical buildings (in Jurkalne, a farmers and fisheries museum will be created in the renovated library house);
- The construction and equipping of a mobile trading site (as a result, a market place has been created for local farmers, fishermen as well as for amateur and folk artists)
