Offical name:
Golfi di Castellammare e Carini
Castellammare and Carini
Description of the area and its main challenges

The FLAG area covers nine municipalities between the north west of Palermo province and the north east part of Trapani province. Tourism is one of the main economic activities in the area with a high presence of spa and beach tourism, underwater archeology and fisheries-related tourism (ittiturismo). The area also relies on pescatourism activities carried out by a dozen fishermen with small boats.
The fishing sector is characterised by small scale artisanal fishing and it is concentrated in five fishing communities: Castellammare del Golfo, Balestrate, Trappeto, Terrasini and Isole delle Femmine. Regarding aquaculture activity, there are three fish farms, one for the fattening of tuna, one for breeding sea bass and sea gilthead bream and the last one which produces sea urchins. However, the fishing sector has experienced a decline and low profitability in recent years. One of the main challenges is to integrate and create linkages between fisheries and the tourism sector, the latter having a significant potential in the FLAG area.
