Description of the area and its main challenges

The area stands out for its varied and good quality fish stocks, a strong seafaring tradition and high (and increasing) consumption of fisheries products. It is an area which has seen extensive coastal development and has a number of major tourist ports, such as those of Crotone, Isola Capo Rizzuto and Ciro Marina. One unique characteristic of the area is the presence of the Marine Protected Area "Capo Rizzuto", one of the largest in Europe with its 14 721 ha and 42 km of coastline.

The challenge of the FLAG is to exploit the peculiarities of the two macro-areas into which the territory can be divided:

The Southern area, which includes the municipalities of Isola Capo Rizzuto/Le Castella and Crotone, is characterized by its "fishing-tourism-environment" identity resulting from the following features: natural resources and protected areas; the presence of small-scale fisheries authorized to operate inside the Marine Protected Area; a high level of local biodiversity with the presence of emblematic species such as the "Caretta Caretta" turtle; a low impact type of tourism (focusing mostly on bathing activities and concentrated during the summer season).

The Northern area, which includes the municipalities of Crotone, Melissa, Strongoli and Cirò Marina, is characterized by its "fishing-tourism-gastronomy" identity derived from the following features: natural resources and protected areas; important gastronomic traditions mainly related to fish and wine; larger type of fishing operations (trawling).
