Description of the area and its main challenges

The FLAG territory covers the coastal municipalities of Agropoli, Ascea, Camerota, Casal Velino, Castellabate, Centola, Hispanic, Montecorice, Pisciotta, Pollica, San Giovanni a Piro, San Mauro Cilento, Santa Marina, Sapri and Vibonati, all of which fall within the Cilento Park and the Vallo di Diano, which is included in the UNESCO list of world heritage sites and is part of the MAB Biosphere reserve programme. Renowned for its natural beauty, unique landscape and the quality of the bathing water, the Cilento coast received blue flag status in 2011, with more than 10 of the FLAG municipalities deemed to meet the necessary criteria.

The fishing industry has a long tradition in the area and has always been one of the main sources of income for the local population. However, nowadays, the sector is in decline and its supply chain is not well adapted to the needs and potential of the territory.
One of the main challenges facing the area is to integrate fisheries and the tourism sector, which has considerable potential in the area, and to improve the collaboration between the two industries in order to enhance integrating activities such as “ittiturismo” and pesca-tourism.

Main focus of FLAG strategy

More specifically, the strategy focuses on the following four objectives:
1. Maintaining the socio-economic welfare of the area and adding value to fishery and aquaculture products;
2. Creating and maintaining jobs in the fisheries areas through support for diversification or economic and social restructuring in areas facing socio-economic problems related to changes in the fisheries sector;
3. Protecting the quality of the coastal environment;
4. Promoting national and transnational cooperation between fisheries areas.
