Description of the area and its main challenges

The FLAG area is characterised by a beautiful coastal landscape, with many architectural and tourist attractions. Parts of the area are also protected as part of the Natura 2000 Network. These characteristics, combined with the area’s fisheries activities, give it an important social and cultural value. The FLAG involves six municipalities (Vernole, Melendugno, Otranto, Santa Cesarea Terme, Castro and Diso). The area is characterized by an excellent water quality as shown by the 17 Legambiente* sails (*national coastal water quality award: five Sails at Melendugno, four Sails at Otranto, Castro and Diso, and two Sails at Santa Cesarea Terme) awarded to 3 of the local authorities.
The main challenges for the FLAG area are:
. Reducing fishery production cost;
. Developing new market strategies (“0” miles, short circuit marketing project)
. Developing new fisheries products;
. Promoting integration between the fisheries sector and other coastal productive sectors

Main focus of FLAG strategy

The main goal of the strategy is to set-up a system for integrated local development, based on local resources, and drawing on the area’s productive potentials and traditional local products. This will be done by promoting local, socio-economic development and ensuring the participation of all local actors in the decision making processes.
The strategy is built around three strategic objectives:
1. Maintenance of the social-economic welfare of local communities and the promotion of fishery and aquaculture products;
2. Sustainable development of the coastal area and environmental protection;
3. Transnational and interregional co-operation and the exchange of best practices.
