Description of the area and its main challenges

The FLAG area is located at the boundary of the municipalities of Halkidiki (Sithonias and Aristoteles). Its geophysical characteristics have shaped its economy and driven the growth of the primary sector and tourism. Fisheries have traditionally supported the local population, providing a source of food, but also creating jobs and income in the sector itself, which in turn has also helped to sustain other sectors of the local economy.

The main challenges facing the area include a high rate of unemployment (especially among women), a scarcity of highly qualified workers, poor management of natural resources, an obsolete fishing fleet, and a decline in the manufacturing sector.

Axis 4 funding will be primarily used to promote sustainable development, through diversification of the fisheries sector, fostering of the local productive base, increasing the competitiveness of local products and services, and promoting multi-occupations.

Main focus of FLAG strategy

The strategic objectives of the FLAG are to enhance the competitiveness of the local productive sector by differentiating and improving the quality of local products and services. It also seeks to improve the “attractiveness” of the area by developing new infrastructure and services and by better exploiting its environmental and historical assets (e.g. Mount Athos, the birthplace of Aristotle, has been declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO)
