Business & accounting training for fishing families - FLAG West Flanders - BE

In collaboration with the local producer organisation, the West Flanders FLAG supported a business and accounting training course for fishermen’s wives managing the accounts of local fishing companies. It quickly proved as popular among fishermen as it was with their wives.

Attracting young people to professional fishing - FLAG South Finland - FI

Thanks to the combination of an apprenticeship project for young fishers and FLAG support to improve a local fishing business, 33 year old Tanja is now a successful fisherwoman and entrepreneur, selling her fresh and processed produce directly to consumers.

All seven Andalusian FLAGs participated in a cooperation project to foster women entrepreneurship across the region by studying the experiences of local women and promoting successful female entrepreneurs as role models to others to turn their business ideas into reality.

Research into the sustainability of the small-scale coastal fishery of the Gulf of Finland


ESKO FLAG covers the coastal region of the Gulf of Finland. This is an area with a long tradition of professional small-scale coastal fishing, though the number of registered full-time fishermen has been steadily declining over the past 25 years and it is increasingly difficult to get new and younger people to continue this traditional activity.

In recent years, questions have been raised about the sustainability of fishing activities in this area. Notably, WWF Finland publishes a yearly consumer guide, which classifies the main types of fish caught in this area, especially salmon and whitefish, as endangered, threatened or protected species, and recommends consumers not to buy them. To compound the problem, there are also some conflicts between fishing professionals, recreational fishing and fishing tourism concerning the exploitation of fish stocks in the area. 

However, the fishermen believed their way of fishing was sustainable and contacted the WWF to discuss the problem. WWF was invited to meet with local fishermen to see how they worked and fish and get a better understanding of their profession. Following the encounter, WWF suggested the fishermen assess their practices using the MSC standards for sustainability and, why not try to get certified by this label.

Community gardens and Community Supported Agriculture are now well established concepts, but in the Pays Marennes Oléron the association IODDE, a partner of local FLAG is reflecting on the potential to develop a form of community or shared aquaculture.

Developing seal-safe trap-nets - FLAG East Finland - FI

The freshwater, Saimaa ringed seal is the only endemic mammal of Finland and the most endangered seal species in the world. One of the main dangers it faces is drowning in fishing nets. However, this also implies serious losses for fishermen who see their nets broken and large proportions of their catch eaten by seals. Fishermen have now worked with conservationists and scientists to develop trap-nets that protect their catch without harming preying seals.

From bio-fuels to fisheries promotion: FLAG Österbotten and FLAG Côte Basque-Sud Landes working together

At the end of May, a delegation from Ostrobothnia, Finland, travelled to the Basque region of southwest France to explore opportunities for cooperation around common themes linked to the fisheries and biofuels sectors.
The group, which included two representatives of the Österbotten FLAG and seven members of the personnel from the Novia University of Applied Sciences in Vaasa, was hosted by Mr Frédéric Perrin, the director of the French institute for pure vegetable oils (Institut Français des Huiles Végétales Pures), IFHVP. The visit included meetings with the Côte Basque-Sud Landes FLAG in Saint Jean de Luz and a visit to the Lycée Maritime de Ciboure. The group also visited the University of Deusto in Bilbao and the fish auction in Saint Jean de Luz, and met with the leader of Adour Landes Océane, one of the two Pays represented on the Côte Basque-Sud Landes FLAG.

A future for the eel, fishermen and researchers cooperate - FLAG Aveiro - PT

Fishermen in Aveiro are participating in environmental conservation measures to help restore the sustainability of a once economically valuable species: the European eel. Their participation is allowing researchers to go further and faster in their study and giving fishermen a role in assessing eels stocks, and a voice in proposing conservation measures.
