Description of the area and its main challenges

The area stretches over more than 600km² of coastline and an archipelago of nearly 27.000 sparsely populated islands. It also includes the densely populated and economically diversified  Stockholm area. The main challenge of the area has been identified as environmental, with steep decline in fish populations because of water quality, overfishing, lack of spawning areas and predation.

Main focus of FLAG strategy

Preserve and develop new jobs fostering social and economic welfare, focusing on specific activities such as fisheries tourism. Improve coastal environment quality and increase availability, profitability of fisheries products. Cooperate with other FLAGS both at national and international level.

Project examples and ideas

- Developing fishing packages for tourists
- Restauration of populations of pike and other species
