Description of the area and its main challenges

Ría de Pontevedra is a coastal area between two peninsulas and the Lérez River estuary. To the west, Ons Islands protects the area from the roughness of Atlantic Ocean. Its principal challenge as an area depending on fisheries is the high competition of the big fisheries markets like Vigo Port.

Main focus of FLAG strategy

Our strategy is based on strengthening the competitiveness of fisheries areas and diversifying activities through the promotion of multiple employment for fishers through the creation of additional jobs outside the sector, especially activities based on the local cultural and natural resources.

- joint marketing projects

- purification of mollusks for direct commercialization for shellfishing women organizations in the Campelo fish market.

- organization of guided visits by Portonovo´s fishing port and market

- improvement of energy efficiency in Bueu´s fishing market

Other key actors/organisations in the partnership: Fishing organizations, local authorities, economical and social agents, such as local communities, associations (NGOs), environmental NGOs, and tourism and leisure activities associations.

Links with LEADER: There are two Leader groups in the territory, one of which developed the FLAG´s strategy. Although it is a separate entity, the FLAG continues to enjoy close cooperation with the two Leader groups.
