Description of the area and its main challenges

The area lies in southern Andalusia on the Mediterranean coast, some 70 km from the city of Granada. Some of the challenges the area faces with regards to its fishing community include consolidating competitiveness, restructuring and refocusing economic activities while diversifying activities and protecting the natural environment.

Population density / Inhabitants/km²: 42 Protected areas: The Maro-Cerro Gordo cliffs, cliffs and sea beds of Punta de la Mona (from Tesorillo to Caleta de Salobreña, and from Calahonda to Castell and, the Peñones de San Cristóbal in Almuñécar.

Main focus of FLAG strategy

To achieve sustainable development through the participation of the community. In particular, we aim to boost the development of fishing, marketing, processing and aquaculture, together with the creation of new sustainable sources of income. Raising the of quality of life in the area a key goal, with special focus on women and young people.

Project examples and ideas

- Updating of companies to improve their productivity and work conditions and to reduce negative environmental impacts.

- Development of projects that will bring additional income to fishing activity.

- Creation of treatment plants for fish waste.

Links with LEADER : The association that manages rural development funds in the area also set up the FLAG – which is set up as a separate legal entity but there is close cooperation between the rural and fisheries development groups
