Description of the area and its main challenges

The Málaga area has an extremely high population density and faces a range of different types of development along its coastline. Partly influenced by other sectors such as tourism, services, construction and trade, the area´s fisheries sector is seeing an increasing reduction in captures. Moreover, the part of the coastal area which has maintained most of the traditional fishing sector is the least developed part of the coast and as such is suffering in particular from the current crisis. Some of the coastal development is also encroaching onto protected areas (rural and marine).
