Description of the area and its main challenges

The fisheries area of Western Almeria opens to the southern Mediterranean, lying south of the Gador mountain range, southwest of the Sierra Nevada and east of the Province of Granada. It covers 28 settlements and makes up an important part of the “Poniente Almeriense”. Its main challenge is to guarantee the economic and environmental sustainability of this fisheries area.

Main focus of FLAG strategy

To generate a set of coherent and productive activities that increase local incomes and raise the quality of life of its inhabitants, utilising the natural and cultural marine resources as a critical element for the sustainability and development of the fishing sector. Four main lines of the strategy stand out: 1) maintaining the social and economic prosperity of the area, and increasing value added of fisheries and  aquaculture products; 2) maintaining and promoting activities in the area through support for diversification and economic and social reconstruction; 3) promoting the environmental quality of the coast; 4) facilitating national and transnational cooperation between fisheries areas.

Project examples and ideas

- Actions aimed at strengthening the fishing sector in the area and increasing the added value of fisheries products.

- Actions directed to the reconstruction, reorientation and diversification of the economic activities of the area, with investments in tourist-fishing boats, cultural areas, etc.

- Initiatives that consider the conservation of the environment and the reestablishment of production affected by natural or industrial disasters.

- Projects that support the employment of underprivileged groups like women, young people and immigrants.

- Interregional and transnational cooperation projects.
