Description of the area and its main challenges

The area is made up of two municipalities that have physical and environmental continuity: Thasos Island and part of the Municipality of Nestos, on the mainland. The abundance of natural resources and landscapes of great aesthetic and ecological value, the historical and cultural heritage traditions and customs, as well as the major cultural activities are the main assets of the region but, at the same time, their conservation is a great challenge as well. Besides fishing and agriculture, marble quarries in the island of Thassos are another relevant economic sector in the FLAG area.

Among the problems of the area, it is worth mentioning the abandonment of the traditional lifestyle and settlements which is leading to a loss of rural population and to a low renewal rate in the existing small fishing fleet.
