Description of the area and its main challenges

The area comprises the island of Kalimnos and its nearby smaller islands: Pserimos (130 inhabitants), Telendos (54 inhabitants), Kalolimnos (20 inhabitants) and Plati (2 inhabitants). The island nature of the FLAG territory and its consequent isolation from the mainland and from the island of Rhodes represent a key challenge for the area. The unemployment rate is also very high compared to the county’s average. This high unemployment and the current decline of the fisheries sector are major problems faced in the area and have forced a significant part of the local population to emigrate.

Besides tourism and fishing, other industries existing in the area are construction, aquaculture and sponge harvesting and treatment. In the last 5 years small steps have been taken to promote climbing and diving tourism.

Main focus of FLAG strategy

The FLAG strategy seeks to make Kalimnos an ideal place for living and working. More precisely, it aims to strengthen the local economy by developing new activities and linking the current areas of production. Priority will be given to the creation of new jobs, the enhancement of the quality of life and the promotion of cooperation between all local stakeholders. The strategy aims to preserve both the local architecture and the natural sites of the area while combining this with new technologies in order to attract tourism, in particular alternative tourism such as climbing, diving and pesca-tourism.

Improving the competitiveness of the fisheries sector (1-5): 3
Diversification into other activities (1-5): 3
