Description of the area and its main challenges

Corsica is a mountain island of rich natural heritage and resources. Tourism is one of the key sectors of its economy while small scale fishing plays a strong role in the island´s identity. The FLAG´s main objective is to support this sector through diversification of economic activities in order to maintain decent income level without endangering fish stocks.

Population density / Inhabitants/km²: 32 (all Corsica), 272 (only coast)     

Protected areas: 83 500 hectares distributed in 6 natural reserves


Main focus of FLAG strategy

- Develop pluri-activities towards tourism and build links with tourist operators and communities;

- Valorise production (image of fishing products, links between cooking traditions and traditional agro-food products);

- Support initiatives that bring fishermen and different actors from the environment sector together.

Project examples and ideas

- Diversify the income sources of fishermen (ecotourism, etc.)

- Improve marketing for fishery products (collective brands, communication)

- Production of a guide on Corsican fishing

- Re-building the link between the sea and the land

- Protection of the environment in fishing areas


Lead Partner / Responsible Legal Entity :  Groupe Régional de Développement Durable FEP (GRDD FEP) – EFF Regional Sustainable Development Group.

Other key actors / organisations in the partnership : The Environment Agency of Corsica (which is responsible for the secretariat of the FLAG), the prud’homies (fishing organisations), the regional maritime fishing and marine fish breeding committee of Corsica, an association set up to develop a Public Interest Group for the promotion of Corsican agro-food products, IFREMER (French Research Institute for Sea Exploitation), STARESO (Oceanographic and submarine Research Station) as well as other actors such as local public structures, the Agency for the Protected Marine Areas and the Tourism Agency.
