Description of the area and its main challenges

East Finland is a large, sparsely populated area of which 17.5% is covered by water. The area has rather high unemployment. Fishermen are ageing and young people have little interest in fisheries. Profitability of the industry and business competence should be improved, while other professions such as fishing tourism need to be developed. Development of sustainable fishing techniques is also among the main challenges.

Project examples and ideas

- Developing a technique for on-growing of perch and pike-perch after catching. This would enable more effective use of by-catch and would distribute the fishing pressure more evenly over a range of species.

- Crab catching and sales development

- Developing trap nets that prevent the Saimaa ringed seal accessing fishermen’s catch but without getting caught and harmed.
