Description of the area and its main challenges

The fisheries area of Fyn is characterised by rural districts with low levels of income and  education and a declining and aging population. The area has more than 30 harbours or landings, but only one of these is a fishery harbour of reasonable scale.

The decline in the fisheries sector is generally attributed to declining fish stocks (due to pollution and overfishing), a lack of interest among young people in becoming fishermen, and the long distances to auctions or processing plants. In addition, there is a feeling that EU regulations do not adequately take account of the situation of small scale fishing businesses (mostly small single handled boats) and traditions.

Furthermore, there is only a limited tradition of collaboration between fishermen in the area. Blue tourism on the other hand is a growing sector, while the wind energy sector seems to have reached maturity in the area.

Improving the competitiveness of the fisheries sector (1 - 5): 3

Diversification into other activities (1 - 5): 2

Project examples and ideas

- Adding value to fisheries products through cooperation with local municipal plans for local food culture/products;

- Developing each small harbour or landing place taking account of local cultural ressources and characteristics, particularly in relation to business, tourism, recreational facilities and environmental protection.

- From offline to online: development of a website ( promoting sea trout fishing from the shores of Fyn. The island is considered as one of the best spots in the world for this type of fishing and this website provides all information necessary for this activity to potential anglers, including fishing hotspots, tips, offers of guided packages, accomodation possibilities, etc.
