Description of the area and its main challenges

The Danish Small Islands FLAG represent 27 small islands scattered across 17 municipalities and four regions, with individual island populations ranging from 20 to 1 200. The FLAG works mainly with volunteers, organisations, and other players at the local, municipal and regional levels. The overarching goal is to preserve and develop small islands as vibrant, year-round communities that appeal to both existing and possible future island dwellers.

Main focus of FLAG strategy

The FLAG strategy focuses mainly on innovation and diversification. The strategy is articulated around two main components:

  • New harbour facilities, activities and events
  • Sustainable business: new products and new services (related to fisheries, aquaculture or other maritime business, including maritime tourism)

Environmental Management (1-5, where 5 is high priority and 1 is low priority):2

- Local fish shop for marketing of local fish to tourists
- Production of edible seaweed          


Lead Partner or Responsible Legal Entity:  The LAG/FLAG is an independent organisation with an executive board
