On the initiative of the Austrian Federal Government, a digital food hub “Lebensmitteldrehscheibe” is going to be installed by public funds to facilitate the transfer of food donations from different stakeholders such as the agricultural , the food production and the food processing sector to social and non-profit organizations in order to fight poverty. Involvement of the retail sector is also desired.

The requirements of the platform were discussed and defined in many stakeholder meetings. The platform shall facilitate the donation and delivery of fresh and processed food, by connecting the donators with social organisations even more efficiently and to support with logistics. This support in networking and logistics aims to reduce food loss amongst all stakeholders in the food value chain. The call for tenders was published recently. Requests to participate must be submitted electronically via the ANKÖ eVergabe platform. The digital food hub is planned to be launched in 2024.
