General information Notification Number B/ES/19/02 Member State to which the notification was sent Spain Date of acknowledgement from the Member State Competent Authority 16/01/2019 Title of the Project Propagation and evaluation in field productivity of 20potato lines (variety Atlantic) modified genetically by the over expression of the endogenous gene Susy of Solanum tuberosum. Proposed period of release: 01/05/2019 to 31/10/2019 Name of the Institute(s) or Company(ies) Idén Biotechnology S.L.
Is the same GMPt been notified elsewhere by the same notifier? No Has the same GMPt been notified elsewhere by the same notifier? No Genetically modified plant Complete name of the recipient or parental plant(s):
Common Name Family Name Genus Species Subspecies Cultivar/breeding line
potato solanaceae solanum solanum tuberosum tuberosum Atlantic
Description of the traits and characteristics which have been introduced or modified, including marker genes and previous modifications: The gene Sucrose Synthase from potato under 35SCaMV promotor was incorporated to potato (var Atlantic). As marker selección, the gene nptII, that confers resistnace to kanamycin. Genetic modification Type of genetic modification: Insertion; In case of insertion of genetic material, give the source and intended function of each constituent fragment of the region to be inserted: - Gene of interest: Sus4 (2425pb) that codes for Sucrose Synthase under constitutive promoter 35SCaMV and nos terminator sequence from Nopalina sintetasa from Agrobacterium tumefaciens.
- Selection Gen: nptII, that confers resitance to kanamycin.
Brief description of the method used for the genetic modification: The method used was tranformation of potato in vitro leaves with Agrobacterium tumefaciens, strain C58C1:GV2260 (Rocha-Sosa M., Sonnewald U., Frommer W.B., Startmann M., Schell J., Willmitzer L, 1989, EMBO J. 8, 23-29) If the recipient or parental plant is a forest tree species, describe ways and extent of dissemination and specific factors affecting dissemination: Not applicable. Experimental Release Purpose of the release: The purpose of the assay is to verify that, as it happens under controlled conditions in greenhouse (data showed on the technical report), the genetically modified plants that express the endogenous gene SuSy of potato defer of its parentales only in the endogenous levels of starch and enzyme activity. This assertion will suppose a very important advance applied to the importance of the starch in the production of biocombustible and plastic biodegradable. Geographical location of the site: Farm La Muñovela of the IRNASA-CSIC, it is located in a cereals producing area with continental climate. Size of the site (m2): 507 m2 Relevant data regarding previous releases carried out with the same GM-plant, if any, specifically related to the potential environmental and human health impacts from the release: This is the first request for releasing this modification.
Nevertheless, there have been realized other essays requested by the Institute of AgroBiotecnología (IBAB), Navarre, using the same gene (SuSy) but incorporated in another potato variety: Desireé (notifications B/ES/06/33 and B/ES/06/34). None of them presented problems related to environment and health issues.
Environmental Impact and Risk Management Summary of the potential environmental impact from the release of the GMPts: It is not foreseeable that the plants in study expressing an internal gene of potato, have any adaptive advantage compared to the receiving plant, not either impact on the environment and human or animal health.
If the results are the expected ones, these plants might bear environmental benefits on having allowed to reduce the surface of the cultivation, the use of agrochemicals and on having allowed to use the starch for the production of alternative energy (bioethanol) and/or biodegradable plastic.
Brief description of any measures taken for the management of risks: - It will be controlled that not authorized person have access to the trial.
- The trial will be surround by the cultivation of crops not sexually related to potato.
- All material not used in leter assays will be destroyed by autoclave.
- Potato will not be sowed on the same plot in the following campaign.
Summary of foreseen field trial studies focused to gain new data on environmental and human health impact from the release: A total of 17 modified lines and 3 controls, including wt, will be sowed (in total 1.800 tubers). By each one, 90 tubers will be split into three subplots of 30 tubers each, in order to be able to do a statistical evaluation of the results. Final report - European Commission administrative Information Consent given by the Member State Competent Authority: Not known
