Assignment

EUAV FORESTS focuses on building the resilience of communities living in forest areas through the voluntary engagement of European volunteers to local communities in Cameroon, Ghana, Guinea, Congo and Vietnam. The action that will mobilize EUAV volunteers is divided into 4 strategic objectives:

  • Develop a comprehensive approach to resilience of forest dependent communities by mapping initiatives, actors and under-lying factors of vulnerability of these communities towards risks, shocks and potential disasters. This study will cover different levels of analysis with the active participation of the targeted communities (local regional, private, public perspectives etc…).
  • Support provided by volunteers to vulnerable populations, which will allow direct development of human capital. Seminars, training, exchanges of good practices will aims at mitigating the impact of climate change and of human induced pollutions cope and at installing adaptative processes.
  • Disseminate qualitative information, strengthening of social ties and support for local populations to set up projects that complement awareness-raising activities.
  • Ensure sustainability through awareness raising and promotion of fundamental changes (attitudes and practices). Here a special attention will be given to the involvement of young people in projects and advocacy campaigns (i.e. rights of forest dependent communities).

At key stages of the project, consortium meetings will be organized as well as training sessions given by experts from the forestry sector. On these occasions, workshops will be held to exchange best practices and knowledge on topics such as good examples of forest governance, project management and communication.

Security:
Cameroon has been affected by a complex humanitarian crisis since 2014; a crisis with multiple and intersecting aspects:
. Influx of Central African refugees on its territory ;
. Presence of armed rebellions operating on its territory (Far North) ;
. Security crisis in the Northwest and Southwest regions (English-speaking regions).

According to the criteria of the Crisis and Support Center of the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, certain areas of Cameroon are placed under reinforced vigilance (all land border areas with Nigeria, Chad and RCA as well as Northern regions).

Cameroonian airspace is currently open to commercial flights. A negative PCR test is required upon arrival in the country, including for young children. The sample must be taken within 72 hours prior to boarding a flight to Cameroon. A test is systematically performed upon arrival at the airport for all travelers.

In the capital and surrounding areas, the situation is calm and allows the deployment of European volunteers. Respect for basic security rules, caution and a respectful attitude towards Cameroonian customs are required in order to effectively limit any risk (road accidents, petty crime, health). It is advisable to be particularly vigilant during the end of year celebrations and to avoid any ostentatious sign of wealth.

At the operational level:
France Volontaires Cameroun works in a network of local organizations. In the framework of the FORESTS project, partnerships were planned with organizations whose objective is to fight for poverty reduction and protect ecosystems and endangered species. The following actions are relevant to the needs:
- Environmental education ;
- Valuation of Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs);
- Valuation of agro-forests;
- Research development action for the benefit of local communities living around protected areas in Cameroon.

The FORESTS project will rely on the Réseau des Acteurs du Volontariat et de la Solidarité Internationale (RAVSI) which is a platform of 75 civil society associations that promotes volunteerism, local skills and experience sharing.

The volunteer will be based in Yaoundé in the premises of the Espace Volontariat under the responsibility of the National Representative.

The information provided in this document may be updated as the pandemic evolves. France Volontaires and ESI Labs! reserve the right to interrupt any recruitment process in order to ensure the health and safety of their teams, volunteers and candidates.
