The EU Aid volunteer will work as a senior midwife, in the health clinics in Kongo village in Ghana. The volunteer should be confident to take responsibility and action in basic working conditions and limited facilities, therefore minimum of 5 years of experience is required. The previous volunteers have reported following issues at the clinics: hygiene, communication (or lack of it) with the patients, limitations with the available facilities and need of further training of other staff members. There can also be a lack of no midwives or medical staff present in case of emergency, and also general drug handling and prescribing is an issue. The volunteer midwife will continue the work which has been started by the previous volunteers and during the last month of deployment will train a new Junior midwife to proceed with the work in clinics.

  • To build the resilience of the local community regarding the maternal health issues
  • To increase the quality of maternal health services in Kongo village to reduce the mortality of children under 5 years


Kongo Community Development Association [KoCDA] is a community based organization in West Africa, Ghana, precisely in Kongo of the Upper East region. The Organization seeks an active individual to play an integral role in various stages of the organizations journey towards helping to leverage existing partnership projects already being implemented in close collaboration with European partners, particularly, Mondo of Estonia. 

Kongo community is in the Upper East region of Ghana, countryside, hilly and valley-like surroundings that can be easy to adapt to for Europeans although some differences are found in the tropical weather and environment. Ghana is a secular country. Three main religions are practiced: African Traditional Religion (5.2%), Christianity (71.2%), and Islam (17.6%). Kongo village is predominantly a Christian/catholic community but very opened to people of different faiths. There is good inter-ethnic/racial relationship. Community members are very open to visitors and Kongo Village has a good reputation of hosting Europeans in the last two decades without any single incidence of security threat. The people are generally welcoming people. There are no tensions between settler and non-settler Communities. There are local police officers that volunteers can reach out to should they be in an insecure situation. There are a number of local health facilities that can help with minor health issues but there is also a regional referral Hospital, reasonably resourced with well trained medical staff and equipment as well as medication. It is possible to be evacuated within 3 to 4 hours to the National Capital, Accra for serious health or any other related matter on emergency. There is a national ambulance system that can reach rural areas.

Health Capacity building support tasks:

- Supporting and training the local midwives to know modern methods of performing deliveries
- Supporting and training the local midwives monitoring and examining women during pregnancy
- Supporting and training the local midwives for developing, assessing and evaluating individual programmes of care
- Supporting and training the local midwives who are providing antenatal care
- Supporting and training the local midwives for supervising and assisting mothers in labour, monitoring the condition of the foetus and using knowledge of drugs and pain management
- Supporting and training the local midwives for supervising and assisting mothers and children in postnatal care
- Providing sexual health trainings at schools in cooperation with the local community nurses and/or midwives

Health and medical support tasks:

- Perform any other official duties that may be assigned
- Support the local team in their daily medical activities


Required competences

- Ability to provide counseling and advice before and after screening and tests

- Ability to offer support and advice following events such as miscarriage, termination, stillbirth, neonatal abnormality and neonatal death

- Ability to give support and advice on the daily care of the baby, including breastfeeding, bathing and making up feeds

- Experience of working in the environment with limited facilities, as the conditions at the local clinics are very basic and sometimes the volunteer midwife is the only midwife in the hospital who has to take the action in any situation

- Autonomy, flexibility, adaptation

The candidate for EU Aid Volunteers must be a citizen of the EU or a third country national who is a long-term resident in an EU Member State, and must have a minimum age of 18 years.


- A minimum of first degree in Midwifery or General Nursing and has certification as a professional midwife
- At least 5 years and more practicing as a Midwife in reputable Hospital in the applicant’s home country
- Experience of working in the environment with limited facilities
- Autonomy, flexibility, good relational

The volunteers work in Northern Ghana, where the climate conditions can be difficult, as it is very hot and windy. Volunteers have access to the office with computer and printer, however the main problem might be power cuts and very slow and non-reliable internet. Therefore, there is a possibility to go to the neighbouring town, Bolgatanga, where volunteers could use internet café.

The volunteers will be hosted in a local guesthouse, the volunteers have their own lockable room, toilet and shower in the room. Food can be pre-ordered (breakfast, lunch, dinner) for an additional cost, as there is a chef working in the guest house.

Selection process

Selection process:
The candidate has to send the following documents to
- his/her application form SuD HAV
- his/her self assessment questionnaire
- his/her CV europass

Between the 02/03 and the 16/03/2018: the pre-selected candidates will have a Skype interview with MONDO and KoCDA.

Between the 19/03 and the 31/03/2018: the candidates interviewed will know if they are selected to participate to the pre-departure training.

Between April and May 2018: The pre-selected candidates will participate to an online and face-to-face pre-departure trainings.

The final selection will be done after the pre-departure trainings at the end of May / beginning of June 2018.

Important notice: additional candidates may be shortlisted for a single position and proposed for the EU Aid Volunteers training. This is to ensure that for each position, substitute volunteers may be chosen to replace the candidate in case he or she resigns or is no longer available. Where more than one candidate has been shortlisted for a single position, final selection takes places following the training.
