One of the main objectives has been the provision of humanitarian assistance to the Haitian population affected by several natural and manmade disasters, that has helped reducing human mortality. As a health NGO, MdM has always worked within this sector, both at the institutional and community levels, through partnerships with the Health Ministry, local health authorities and the population itself. By tackling problems related to the reestablishment of the health structures after natural disasters (i.e. earthquakes and hurricanes) and fighting against cholera outbreaks as well as against acute malnutrition (particulaly as a consequence of the El Niño phenomenon) and, finally, by fighting against maternal and child mortality due to lack of access to primary health structures, the MdM network in Haiti has improved technical capacities, community resilience and living conditions for the Haitian population.
