The JA will be contribute to public health programmes in Europe and develop Alzheimers disease (AD) and dementia prevention and care models in different European countries. The aim is to contribute to improvements in health by supporting and facilitating quality and efficiency of public health and healthcare policies and interventions. Synergy and avoidance of duplication with other health and research programs will be ensured.
The aim is to build a sustainable European platform. The objectives of ALCOVE are to accomplish the following during the 2 year project duration:
1. Establish a European statement on Alzheimer`s disease: Propose a synthesis regarding AD information and practices in Europe which could be the basis for further implementation at the European level
2. Ability of the JA to support the implementation of good practices in the field of risk prevention with measured results for patients: a focus on the overuse of psychotropics.


Analysis and collection of data and indicators on public health impacts of ageing populations and workforces in Europe: Public health report on ageing populations and workforces in Europe
- Analysis and collection of current practices, strategies and policies aimed at improving the health status and reducing health inequalities by tackling relevant health determinants among the elderly populations and workforces across Europe
- Preparing a new working platform in the area of health information and work and establishment of this working party with a view to operating and monitoring the field of work and health


To set up a health information and surveillance programme for reporting issues relevant to ageing and health, by establishing a central databank of standardised data including baseline information on socio-demographic, dietary, lifestyle, somatometric characteristics and self reported morbidity, as well as follow up data on any of the above mentioned parameters and cause specific mortality of elderly Europeans. To develop a mechanism of analysis of data related to ageing and health by applying appropriate methodology regarding the role of the indicated parameters and/or their interactions in healthy ageing, in order to identify potential environmental determinants of self-reported morbidity and mortality of elderly Europeans. To prepare public health reports on the health status of a large cohort of Europeans aged 60 years or more, as well as on associated environmental determinants which can be used at the policy making level. To disseminate through targeted activities, the results of the project.


Oncology is undoubtedly currently the fastest developing area of healthcare. More or less every month new drugs come to the market; many of them are formulations for oral administration. This means that the complex treatment of often co-morbid oncology patients is moving from a supervised hospital setting to the patient’s home and dispensing of potent oral anticancer drugs to general community pharmacies. Pharmacists in such pharmacies are not specialized in care for oncology patients, since the curriculum of pharmacy studies includes few oncology-related topics.
Our purpose is to empower pharmacists to improve therapy-related outcomes and patient safety by lending support for the pharmaceutical counselling related to the dispensing of oral anticancer drugs. By doing so in selected member countries, we will create a best-practice model for the EU.
To this end, we will first survey the current situation and problems at dispensing of oral anticancer drugs in the EU. Based on the results we will design optimal post-graduate education for pharmacists about oncology topics and develop IT-tools that assist the pharmaceutical counselling process. This will allow the pharmacist quick access to essential information on oral oncology drugs including important advice for patients as well as useful service options like the preparation of treatment plans for the patient. By evaluating user satisfaction with the IT-tools and educational programme and subsequent implementation of improvements, we establish a ‘learning system’. This system will be put to effect in the participating partner countries and later made available for implementation in other EU-countries.
These measures will improve patients’ self-efficacy regarding his or her disease and therapy and, consequently, will enhance adherence.


Our purpose is to critically reduce the burden of frailty in Europe by assisting those partners within the European Innovation Partnership for Active Healthy Ageing (EIPAHA) with commitments focusing on early diagnosis/screening and/or management of frailty to achieve scalability. We have selected EIPAHA because it constitutes a critical instrument for the EU and because it composes the widest representation of initiatives about frailty in Europe.
Our project offers both a service and a network. The service consists of evidence-based guidelines to critically help the selected group of partners to satisfactorily achieve their goals. The network intends to prolong the service in the long term.
To achieve that purpose (WP4) we will define the roadmap, in that we will i) describe the state of art (review of the scientific literature), ii) get a picture of the status of the affected commitments within EIPAHA (barriers, enablers, etc.), and iii) obtain information of the needs of stakeholders. With this real-world landscape in hand, WP5 will define indicators and use a scientifically sound method, comparative effectiveness research, to draw conclusions regarding the most adequate and customized approach to assist commitments in achieving success. Inequalities, cultural conditions or cross-border issues will be considered as representative of the diversity in Europe. Guidelines and toolkits will be issued with the perspective of sustainability. WP6 will constitute the “Platform for Knowledge Exchange” (PKE), which will both facilitate and perpetuate exchange between partners and stakeholders to achieve synergies and guide progression. PKE will act as a repository and as an instrument for dissemination too. WP7 will be a practical test to verify the usability and performance of guidelines in real EIPAHA commitments.
Relevance derives from the wide prevalence of frailty in Europe, consistently the focus throughout the work programme.


