The Alcohol Policy Youth Network aims at becoming a capacity building network for youth organisations from across Europe and to empower them to be active and valid players in the field of alcohol policy and alcohol harm reduction.
The platform will be a service provider to youth organisations and young people as such from across Europe (pan-European project) developing tools and spaces for the empowerment of young people to become active players in the definition, advocacy, implementation and evaluation of alcohol policies and programmes at the local, national, regional and European levels.
APYN will also serve as a gathering platform of youth organisations from across Europe and will promote youth participation through accountable, democratic, transparent, bottom-up youth networks and structures with the aim of reaching as many young people as possible and allowing for as many young people as possible to be able to participate not only in the internal activities of APYN but also in the ongoing political processes and programmes addressing alcohol related harm and alcohol harm reduction strategies.
The network does not intend to reproduce existing structures but rather complement existing ones such as Eurocare or the European Youth Forum at the same time as allowing for more youth voices and projects to be identified, developed and brought forward at the European level.
This project is the follow-up to the work developed by the European Youth Forum and Eurocare in 2005/2006 and has a mandate follows the recommendations of the 2001 WHO Ministerial Conference on Alcohol and Young People, the European Council recommendations on the drinking of alcohol by young people of 2006 and the European Youth Forum`s Position Paper on Alcohol related harm from 2007.
APYN will also be following up on the APYN Strategy for 2008 and 2009, a document developed by youth organisations identifying the priorities for their work in the field of alcohol policy and setting the network’s needs for the coming years.
