This project seeks to increase the awareness within municipal policy makers and “professional practitioners” on how the socio-cultural context within the local settings, where municipalities can intervene with health promoting activities has an effect on healthy lifestyle choices and the health status within families. The increased awareness will increase these groups’ ability and willingness to develop and implement activities which are specifically developed in relation to the socio cultural context, where they are supposed to have an effect. The general objective of this project is therefore to ensure that health promoting activities, focusing on overweight, obesity and healthy lifestyle choices especially within young people and their families, has a better and long lasting effect.
The project gives a substantial contribution to the EU`s strategy for Europe on Nutrition, Overweight and Obesity related health issues, as it deals with e.g. the social dimension of the issue, actions on local level, systematic monitoring, early childhood intervention and family approach, which are all important issues to deal with if EU should succeed with the implementation of the strategy.
The objective will be reached through an "action research" approach, where the partners develop, test and disseminate conceptual frameworks and recommendations on how to qualify local health strategies, programmes and implementation practice, based on a substantial collection and analysis of comprehensive initiatives and good practice examples from 12 pilot municipalities. The project is four phased, consisting of a preparation phase, a qualification phase, an implementation phase and an evaluation and recommendation phase.
The expected output of the project is; 1) 12 pilot municipalities with qualified local health strategy, program and implementation practice, 2) conceptual frameworks and recommendations to support the process of qualification which will be disseminated through local and European conferences and a website.
